The MEB Command Element (CE) provides a Marine Air Ground Task Force /Joint Task Force(MAGTF/JTF)-capable headquarters that can rapidly deploy and when directed composites with naval and / or land-based forward-deployed and/or rapidly deployable forces to form a MAGTF or the core element of a JTF headquarters in order to fulfill Geographic Combatant Commander (GCC) operational requirements.

The Marines and Sailors of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), embarked on the USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19), arrived in Cartagena, Spain, Oct. 4, 2023, to conduct Marine Air-Ground Task Force unit-level sustainment training and a bilateral training exercise to strengthen relations with a key NATO ally during a scheduled mid-deployment maintenance period for the USS Mesa Verde.

Colonel Shea is currently serving as the Chief of Staff for 2nd MEB. Colonel Shea was commissioned from the United States Military Academy in 1999. As a company grade officer, his operational assignments include: Rifle Platoon Commander and Combined Anti-Armor Platoon Commander with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines (Unit Deployment Program and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 1) and Weapons Company and Company A Commander with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines (Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 06-08.2 and 9-1).
Sergeant Major Mendez is currently serving as the Sergeant Major for 2d MEB. Sergeant Major Mendez is a native of Brooklyn, New York, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1997. Upon completion of recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina, Private First Class Mendez reported to the School of Infantry where he earned the MOS 0311 and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
